The Winemaker Research Assistant supports activities of the research winemaking process. Makes wine in support of research projects according to standard procedures and to the specific needs of the project.

What You Will Do:

  • Responsible for the production of research-scale wine in support of research projects.
  • Manages wine process operations to ensure wines are made to specifications including, but not limited to temperature, TA, pH, Brix, and VA.
  • Manages the general operation of the Research Winery, including coordination of the arrival of raw materials and the delegation of work to the staff.
  • Participates in certain aspects of the wine grapes: grape assessment, harvest, and analysis.
  • Participates in management of grape receiving and wine production operations during harvest, as assigned.
  • Manages wine quality at a fundamental level.
  • Conducts Fining Trials and manages certain winemaking and wine processing trials.
  • Manages bench tasting of wines produced in the Research Winery as part of making chemical adjustments and final bottling approval, along with Viticulture Research team.
  • Participates in berry sensory analysis and harvest decisions for special projects.
  • Maintains and sorts winemaking data for approved research projects.
  • Conducts analysis and interpretation of experimental results.
  • Collects, collates, and documents all data collected during the winemaking and packaging processes, including chemical and sensory analyses using standard documentation and information systems.
  • Supports all Winegrowing Research and Winemaking projects that require research-scale wines.
  • Ensures wine is made according to proper procedures and processes for both harvest and off-season experiments.
  • Manages winemaking processes including chemical adjustments, racks and pressing, and prepares wines for filtration and packaging.
  • Identifies, documents, and communicates improvement opportunities in the Research Winery.
  • Ensures the organization and efficient processing of cold room materials.
  • Mentors harvest interns and lab technicians.
  • Trains harvest interns in winemaking processes and safety procedures.

What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fermentation Science, Enology & Viticulture, Food Science, Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering plus 2 years of fermentation science, enology or viticulture experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 6 years fermentation science, enology or viticulture experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.

What Will Set You Apart:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fermentation Science or Enology & Viticulture plus 4 years of fermentation science, enology or viticulture experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
