As a Senior Manager Product Intsights/Sensory Ops you will lead and manage research sensory operations for the organization. Oversees descriptive, discrimination, and cross functional training programs relating to in depth wine and spirits evaluation as needed for multiple functions. Determines and drives the departmental overall goals and objectives. Manages the day to day operations of the sensory lab and develops systems to improve efficiencies and data accuracy which includes the implementation of state-of-the-art methodologies aimed at understanding the product in greater depth. Contributes to product/package sensory evaluation test plans, reviews historical data, analyzes new sensory data, writes and communicates periodic update reports.

 

You will identify opportunities to meet consumer changing preferences and develops and executes research programs designed to result in new or improved product guidance. You will be responsible for leading and managing complex, strategic cross-functional projects with senior management project members across Winemaking, Liquid Development, Brand Marketing, and Central Innovation.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Manages day to day operations for all product guidance research including procurement, Documentation and style attainment programs.
  • Discovers, develops and evaluates new product ideas, enhancements to existing products or strategic product extensions and translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.
  • Complies and derives insights from foundational research, consumer feedback and other learnings to understand all areas of opportunity and inform the next generation of products and R&D and Liquid Innovation projects. Uses data from multiple sources to synthesize conclusions and actions.
  • Stimulates generation of ideas leading to the development of new or improved products that align with consumer preferences.
  • Informs and educates SR leadership on trends and opportunities and provides regular updates on progress of projects.
  • Trains and directs full time and temporary staff in the implementation of sensory research and training. Ensures all staff is driving towards completion of key projects and department objectives.
  • Manages quality platform which includes strategic and applied research of wine and spirits to determine the impact of packaging and the distribution system on products and the assessment of wine quality from vintage to vintage.
  • Oversees the Descriptive Analysis program including recruiting, data collection, training and performance monitoring. Seeks out continuous improvement opportunities and implements changes as necessary. Develops research strategies for each project with quality and technical partners to include time frames, resource limitations, and determination of appropriate methodology. Engages staff and team members where appropriate.
  • Conducts complex studies, research, interprets experimental data and provides technical recommendations to the organization.
  • Ensures the efficient operation of discrimination panels including recruiting, training, data analysis and performance monitoring.
  • Drives the cross functional training program for employees including berry sensory and winemaker descriptive and defect training.
  • Recommends and implements improvements in data acquisition, performance monitoring, laboratory operations and methodology, integrating state of the art methods from the consumer packaged goods industry into the Gallo business.
  • Contributes to defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Leads in the department and interdepartmental planning and management teams and works cross functionally to improve processes within the organization.
  • Responsible for developing a strategic vision for the innovation for existing brands, packaging and shelf-life platforms and guiding the execution of the vision across cross-functional teams.
  • Represents Central Innovation when issues arise with product quality from root cause analysis to consumer engagement.
  • Actively monitors consumer package goods and other industries for new product packaging and methodologies. Development of new methods as needed to address consumer and customer needs.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations. If accountable for the work of others, responsible for ensuring their understanding and compliance.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Develops, coaches and mentors peers, indirect and subordinate staff.
  • If accountable for the work of others, conducts performance evaluations; reviews and communicates salary adjustments; rewards employees or takes disciplinary action, as necessary; addresses complaints and resolves issues.

 

What You Will Need

  • PhD plus 4 years of food technology, sensory, product research and development, viticulture, enology, chemistry, statistics, or marketing research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR Master of Science degree plus 6 years of food technology, sensory, product research and development, viticulture, enology, chemistry, statistics, or marketing research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR Bachelor of Science degree plus 8 years of food technology, sensory, product research and development, viticulture, enology, chemistry, statistics, or marketing research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Supervisory or managerial experience.
  • 3 years of sensory and/or product research and development experience.
  • Skilled in juggling multiple tasks while still delivering high quality results.
  • Experience with influencing both peers and superiors and leading team members to a common solution based on data.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to manage and prioritize a high volume of projects.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint at an intermediate level.
  • Skilled in effectively presenting information to top management, public groups, and boards of directors.
  • Required to lift and move boxes of product weighing up to 45 lbs.
  • Ability to see, smell, and taste wine as part of job duties.
  • Required to be 21 years of age or older.
  • Demonstrated leadership and influencing skills in a multi-functional business environment.
  • Highly organized and strong sense of urgency around timely delivery of work products.
  • Experience in a consumer-packaged goods company.

 

 

What Will Set You Apart:

  • Master of Science degree in Food Technology, Food Science/Nutrition Science, Sensory Science, Viticulture, Enology, Chemistry, Statistics or Applied Mathematics plus 8 years of sensory or product research and development experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Skilled in reading, analyzing, and interpreting common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Skilled in responding to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Skilled in writing speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Strong analytical and complex problem-solving skills; takes a new perspective using existing solutions.
  • Skilled in effectively presenting information to top management, public groups, and boards of directors.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint at an intermediate level.
  • Experience using Statistical Analysis Software (SAS, SPSS).
  • Skilled in applying advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
  • Skilled in applying mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Experience interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and dealing with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Experience influencing both peers and superiors and leading team members to a common solution based on data.
  • Experience with defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions. Experience with interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and dealing with several abstract and concrete variables.
