As the Director of Sensory & Consumer Reserach responsible for managing strategic guidance obtained from consumer and product knowledge in product categories in which Gallo competes. Provides subject matter expertise to cross-functional partners to drive business decisions around product style guidance and consumer driven opportunities. Responsible for sensory operations for the organization. Provides leadership and strategic guidance for sensory research operations capabilities including descriptive, discrimination, and cross functional training programs relating to in depth wine and spirits evaluation to support business needs. Determines and drives the departmental goals and objectives. Provides technical expertise and guidance to develop systems to improve efficiencies and data accuracy which includes the implementation of state-of-the-art methodologies aimed at understanding the product in greater depth. Responsible for product/package sensory evaluation testing, reporting and organizational communication. Identifies opportunities to meet consumer changing preferences and develops and executes research programs designed to result in new or improved product guidance. Leads and manages complex, strategic cross-functional projects with senior management project members across Winemaking, Liquid Development, Brand Marketing, and Central Innovation.



  • Creates and champions the vision for Sensory Insights and Research
  • Creates and manages consumer and product research strategies for new and existing products in winery.Discovers, develops and evaluates new product ideas, enhancements to existing products or strategic product extensions and translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.
  • Creates and manages sensory operations function. This includes all aspects of descriptive or difference testing, descriptive panel training, maintenance and winery training.
  • Interfaces with all aspects of winery business to determine requirements for research, communication and presentation of critical insights.
  • Partners with Consumer Insights group to create efficient research and communication vehicles for organization.
  • Works with Information Intelligence, Consumer Relations, Central Innovation and Product Development. Projects may include systems to create greater efficiency in data collection, reporting and communication.
  • Partners with sensory research to test and analyze Research & Development advances and understand foundational research learnings and application implications for base business and longer term style guidance strategies.
  • Partners with functions across Winery to communicate vision and value of Product Insights and Sensory Operations
  • Creates joint projects with other functions to create and improve business use of information.
  • Leads team to achieve goals of organization.
  • Updates senior members of leadership on progress, learnings and business impact of organization.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations. If accountable for the work of others, responsible for ensuring their understanding and compliance.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Develops, coaches and mentors peers, indirect and subordinate staff.
  • Conducts performance evaluations; reviews and communicates salary adjustments; rewards employees or takes disciplinary action, as necessary; addresses complaints and resolves issues.


  • Bachelor’s degree plus 12 years of sensory or marketing research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility or Master’s degree plus 10 years of sensory or marketing research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Experience conducting research for a consumer-packaged goods organization.
  • Experience with influencing both peers and superiors and leading team members to a common solution based on data.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to manage and prioritize a high volume of projects.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint at an intermediate level.
  • Skilled in effectively presenting information to top management, public groups, and boards of directors.
  • Required to lift and move boxes of product weighing up to 45 lbs.
  • Ability to see, smell, and taste wine and spirits as part of job duties.
  • Required to be 21 years of age or older.
  • Demonstrated leadership and influencing skills in a multi-functional business environment.
  • Highly organized and strong sense of urgency around timely delivery of work products.


  • PhD in Food Science plus 10 years of sensory or marketing research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Skilled in effectively presenting information to top management, public groups, and boards of directors.
  • Experience using Statistical Analysis Software (SAS, SPSS).
  • Demonstrated leadership and influencing skills in a multi-functional business environment.
  • Skilled in thinking strategically and translating into logical business applications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in area of specialization (sensory, consumer research and product development) to completion of significant assignments.
