As the Director of Benefits and Disability/Leave Management you will be responsible for the enterprise health benefits programs and integrated delivery of disability and absence management services. In this position you will be tasked to refine and maintain overall vision for the function’s approach to service delivery.  In addition to the day to day operations of the Health Benefits, Disability Management and Workers’ Compensation teams in compliance with established policies and procedures.

What You will Do

  • Establishes a working liaison between employees off work and restricted employees along with their department managers to facilitate disability accommodations.
  • Engages displaced employees in a job search process where necessary.
  • Establishes and maintains a working liaison with employees and department managers facilitating transitional programs and a return to work environment.
  • Oversees interactive process meetings to determine leave and reasonable accommodation strategies for both employee and Company interests.
  • Provides expert policy guidance in matters related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the California Family Rights Act (CFRA), The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), and advises both managers and employees of their rights and responsibilities under these leaves and their correlation to Company policy.
  • Develops a training program and conducts periodic training on interactive process. Collects, analyzes, and organizes data related to work injury restrictions and placements and provides this information on a periodic basis to management. Manages multiple vendors including the Company’s benefits vendors, on-site medical vendor, drug, and alcohol testing vendors, leave of absence and disability vendors.

Health Benefits:

  • Recommends benefits programs to management by studying employee requirements and trends and developments in benefits offered by other organizations.
  • Supports management’s decision making by analyzing benefit options and predicting future costs.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; obtaining qualified opinions; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Expedites delivery of benefits by establishing and maintaining working relationships with benefit providers.  
  • Leads benefits staff by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Integrated Disability Management:

  • Provides leadership, oversight and administration of Disability Management and Workers’ Compensation processes.
  • Oversees the coordination and facilitation of the return to work process for employees with disabilities to work environment.
  • Leads in the development of and implements a successful vision/strategy, through strong leadership skills.
  • Leads department and interdepartmental planning and management teams and works cross-functionally to improve processes within the organization.
  • Acts as subject matter expert liaison with management and employees to provide information necessary for a successful program.
  • Evaluates, designs, and presents new approaches for consideration in corporate disability management strategy.
  • Participates in strategic planning for companywide disability management and workers’ compensation initiatives.
  • Conducts coaching/education sessions with Team Leaders and Management regarding open leave, workers’ compensation and reasonable accommodation cases.
  • Oversees the transitioning of cases into the interactive process and conducts meetings with employees, management, and human resource representatives in both union and non-union environments.
  • Oversees and participates in case management of restricted employees.

What You will Do

  • High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate.
  • Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years of progressive experience with Health Benefits and/or Disability Management including conducting interactive process meetings reflecting increasing levels of responsibility. OR Master’s degree plus 8 years of Health Benefits or Disability Management experience.
  • Five (5) years in a supervisory or leadership capacity required.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Legal Studies plus 12 years of either workers’ compensation or disability management experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Master’s degree plus 10 years of Health Benefits or Disability Management experience.
  • Experience as a health benefits or disability management consultant with a brokerage or consulting firm
  • Experience with vendor management, preferably with on-site medical, workers’ compensation, leave of absence and disability vendors.
  • Ability to analyze leave data and make recommendations to management for absence management.
  • Experience dealing with medical leave management, return to work, workers compensation and third party administrators.
  • Experience presenting information and responding to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Word, and MS Excel at an intermediate level.
