Summary:

The Chemistry Research Associate 2 supports the research of senior staff scientists by planning and executing chemistry research projects and experiments that contribute to improving winemaking processes and wine quality.

What You'll Do:

  • Plans and conducts experiments that contribute to the improvement of commercial processes and wine quality.
  • Supports Staff Scientists by conducting chemistry research experiments.
  • Collects experimental data, analyzes and interprets results, and writes technical reports in a format appropriate for customer needs.
  • Contributes to the planning of chemistry research projects that contribute to the improvement of commercial processes and wine quality.
  • Participates on cross-functional and interdepartmental teams to accomplish project goals.
  • Conducts standard chemistry testing.
  • Maintains laboratory research notebooks to regulatory and legal standards.
  • Reports regularly on the status, continuing direction, and timing of experiments and projects through oral and written communication.
  • Takes responsibility for contributing to the planning and execution of projects during Crush at site wineries.
  • Continuously improves and develops new technical skills.
  • Stays current with the latest scientific and trade literature and communicates ideas that will contribute to improved commercial and winemaking processes.
  • Conducts routine maintenance of equipment and systems.
  • Maintains a safe laboratory work environment and conducts work in accordance with good laboratory practices and safety guidelines.
  • Maintains a clean and tidy work space and participates in general laboratory housekeeping.
  • Works with others in the laboratory to maintain an inventory of laboratory chemicals and consumables.
  • Actively supports and conducts problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Contributes to a work environment that embraces change and fosters innovation.
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations. If accountable for the work of others, responsible for ensuring their understanding and compliance.

What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, Biochemistry or Fermentation Science plus 3 years of wine, food, pharmaceutical or environmental laboratory experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Candidates for this position must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Required to obtain a California driver’s license or appropriate state driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
  • Required to work non-traditional and extended hours at the site wineries during harvest.
  • Required to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Required to travel to company offices, sites, and/or meeting locations for onboarding, training, meetings, and events for development, department needs, and business delivery up to 5% of the time, with or without reasonable accommodation. This may be in addition to travel requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.

What Will Set You Apart:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Fermentation Science or Food Science plus 5 years of wine, food, or environmental laboratory experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; or a Master of Science degree in Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Food Science plus 3 years of wine, food, or environmental laboratory experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Experience using advanced laboratory instrumentation including IC, GC, GC/MS, HPLC, LC/MS, GPC and FTIR.

Compensation:

  • Hiring Salary Range Posted: $65,400 - $98,000
  • Actual compensation paid within the range will be determined by factors such as the education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
