This position will be based at J Vineyards & Winery. The Enologist performs enology functions associated with the winemaking process at assigned Estate across all wine varieties and brands. Influences the production of wines and the quality of wine delivered to the consumer.

 

A Taste of What You’ll Do

  • Support day-to-day winemaking operations by managing workflows, coordinating work orders, and partnering with production teams.
  • Perform and document laboratory and sensory activities: sample pulls, tastings, blending, bench trials, and trial set-up.
  • Conduct routine wine and product testing using titrimetric, instrumental and other lab methods; enter and report results in LIMS.
  • Monitor wine, concentrate and spirits quality by reviewing analyses, tank inspections, and inventory; escalate out-of-spec issues to winemakers.
  • Manage inventory-related tasks including SO2 additions, topping, library sample inventory, and readiness for bottling/shipping.
  • Support bottling activities and QA processes: pre-bottling checks, line start-up analysis, bottling reports, and QC hold support.
  • Maintain accurate tasting notes, historical records, data tracking, and generate required reports.
  • Follow and improve winemaking SOPs, participate in continuous improvement and cross-functional projects, and promote an inclusive culture.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, quality and budgetary guidelines; maintain reliable attendance and escalate issues to leadership.

 

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering; or Associates of Applied Science in Viticulture and Enology plus 2 years of experience in enology;  or High School Diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate plus 4 years of experience in enology.
  • Candidate is required to have a valid driver’s license, a safe driving record and reliable vehicle (if

applicable) at the time of hire. This position will undergo a motor vehicle check (MVR) to confirm a history of safe and responsible driving. If needed, candidate must obtain the appropriate state driver’s license based on the position’s location within 30 days of hire.

  • Required to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Required to possess the color vision necessary to judge and evaluate wine color.
  • Required to taste and evaluate wines.
  • Required to be 21 years of age.
  • Required to travel to company offices, sites, and/or meeting locations for onboarding, training,  meetings, and events for development, department needs, and business delivery up to 5% of the
  • time, with or without reasonable accommodation. This may be in addition to travel requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.
  • Required to be 18 years or older. This may be in addition to other age requirements, if applicable, as listed in this job description.

 

How You’ll Stand Out

  • Bachelor's degree in Fermentation Science, Biology, Viticulture & Enology, Food Science,  Microbiology, Chemistry, Biological/Agricultural/Chemical Engineering plus 2 years of enology experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Completion of one grape harvest; experience with grape crushing and the production winemaking processes.
  • Basic sensory exposure to the world of wine.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint at an intermediate level.
  • Experience working with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Experience solving practical problems and dealing with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Experience interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Experience following established procedures to performing tasks that are routine in nature, requiring some evaluation, originality, or ingenuity.
  • Experience defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Experience learning and adapting to equipment, processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fundamental of wine chemistry, viticulture practices and grape varieties.
