The Enology Research Associate supports the research of senior staff by executing complex experiments in support of enology research projects that contribute to the improvement of winemaking processes and wine quality. Also assumes the duties of the laboratory/winery lead when necessary.

What You Will Do

  • Supports the planning and execution of experiments and trials at the laboratory, pilot and plant scales, which contribute to the improvement of commercial processes and wine quality.
  • Supports research staff by preparing and conducting experiments; performs winemaking processes accurately and in alignment with operational SOPs and experimental protocols.
  • Oversees the completion of GMP and safety inspections and general maintenance upkeep and proactively identifies and reports issues.
  • Serves as the Winegrowing Research liaison to the coastal safety committee.
  • Completes Work Orders and data entry into related systems for TTB compliance and experimental tracking.
  • Executes all aspects of winemaking process at Sonoma Research Winery and takes responsibility for aspects of production.
  • Participates in planning and executing experiments/projects at site wineries during the grape harvest.
  • Assists with the responsibilities of the laboratory/winery administrator to include the following:
    • Ordering supplies in support of project work.
    • Maintaining preventative maintenance schedule for equipment and communicates to individual groups to conduct the actual preventative maintenance.
    • Facilitating repair of equipment.

What You Need

  • Master's Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Fermentation Science, Food Science, Microbiology, Enology, Geology, Soil Science, Viticulture or Molecular Biology; OR Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Fermentation Science, Food Science, Microbiology, Enology, Geology, Soil Science, Viticulture or Molecular Biology plus 2 years of research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Required to frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Required to be 21 years of age or older.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision.
  • Required to work outside of normal working hours including weekends.
  • Candidates for this position must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. Required to obtain a California driver’s license or appropriate state driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

What Will Set You Apart

  • Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Fermentation Science, Food Science, Microbiology, Enology, Geology, Soil Science, Viticulture or Molecular Biology plus 2 years of enology research experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Completion of one grape harvest; experience with grape crushing and the production winemaking processes.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint at an intermediate level, and MS Access at a basic level. Working knowledge of internet functions.
