Summary:

The Microbiologist uses classical and advanced microbiology techniques to monitor beverage quality and prevent product spoilage. Conducts microbial risk assessments of products and processes. Works cross-functionally with supply chain, operations, and beverage making partners.

What You Will Do:

  • Monitors beverage making processes and products for any activities and formulations which would/could impact microbial stability.
  • Identifies microorganisms by microscopic examination of physiological, morphological and cultural characteristics.
  • Oversees a collection of specimens for study or reference purposes.
  • Functions as a liaison to other departments regarding microbiological and sanitation issues.
  • Follows established standard procedures and methods to plan and conduct sample testing; makes recommendations relating to the continuous improvement of procedures.
  • Collects and processes microbial samples, prepares media, records relevant information and generates various reports.
  • May use polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and spectroscopy to identify yeast and bacteria, when applicable.
  • Works with beverage partners to identify and troubleshoot sources of contamination.
  • Partners with beverage making, cellar, engineering and operations team members to implement problem-solving techniques and facilitate investigative action.
  • Plans, organizes, and participates in field inspections, tests or surveys related to research projects.
  • Maintains an understanding of all relevant scientific methodology.
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance, to include timeliness.
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations. If accountable for the work of others, responsible for ensuring their understanding and compliance.

What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Food Science, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry, plus 2 years of microbiology or laboratory technician experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate, plus 6 years of microbiology or laboratory technician experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility. 

What Will Set You Apart:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Food Science, or Molecular Biology or Biochemistry, plus 3 years of microbiology or laboratory technician experience reflecting increasing levels of responsibility; OR 
  • Master’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Food Science, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of food and beverage microbiology.
  • Experience reading, analyzing and interpreting general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
  • Familiar with using spectroscopy and chemometrics for microorganism identification.
  • Experience writing reports, business correspondence and lab procedures.
  • Experience effectively presenting information and responding to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.
  • Skilled in the intermediate use of MS Word and Excel and the basic use of MS Access, PowerPoint and LIMS.
  • Experience applying mathematical concepts such as exponents and logarithms.
  • Experience applying mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.
  • Experience solving practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Experience interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Experience applying established procedures to situations that are non-routine in nature requiring some evaluation, originality, and ingenuity.
